THE-801 Historical and Theological Roots of the Pentecostal/ Wesleyan Holiness Movements

Learner Outcomes: 

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to: discuss the historical origins of the Pentecostal tradition and its relationship with the Wesleyan tradition and the Holiness movements; identify the biblical and theological roots of Pentecostalism reflected both in the Bible and in history; articulate a personal and thoughtful statement of what it means to be spiritual within the Pentecostal tradition; critically evaluate the significance of events studied and the resulting theological processes within the Pentecostal and Charismatic movements from a Wesleyan perspective; apply the principles of Pentecostal spirituality in ministerial contexts in which it falls; and articulate the major historical and theological developments of the Pentecostal and Charismatic movements of the 20th century.

Instruction: 

This course surveys and evaluates the historical development of the Wesleyan and Holiness movement of the 18th and 19th centuries and focuses on interaction with the prevailing religious-historical setting and its impact on the future Pentecostal movement.  Instruction presents people, influences and events that shaped the Pentecostal movement from its beginnings to the present. In addition, particular consideration is given to theological distinctives as expounded in their historical, cultural, and ecclesiastical contexts.

Credit recommendation: 

In the graduate degree category, 3 semester hours in Theology, History, or Biblical Studies (3/25).
