60 Hours (24 weeks).
October 2020 - Present.
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to: identify with greater breadth, depth, and understanding what is written in Scripture; use commonly accepted methods for receiving the meaning intended by the author(s) of a biblical passage; use a variety of tools (including study aids) for more effective Bible reading, interpretation, and response; explain several significant issues surrounding the interpretation and application of Scripture; make appropriate responses to God’s revelation in Scripture; develop a lifelong commitment to a study of God’s word as well as carefulness, integrity, and practicality in that pursuit; create and utilize lesson plans; teach from a biblical text using the expository method; teach from a biblical text using the discovery method; and avoid common pedagogical mistakes when teaching the Bible.
The course involves lecture, reading, analysis (through extensive use of study guides) and student-teaching to explore and practice elements of biblical exegesis. Direct instruction introduces a broad selection of exegetical tools with an eye toward their application in the planning and execution of inductive Bible study in a small group setting. The latter part of the course raises exegetical issues specific to various genres present in biblical literature.
In the lower division baccalaureate/associate degree category, 3 semester hours in Old Testament, New Testament, or Religious Studies elective and 1 semester hour in education (10/25).
