Learner Outcomes: 

Version 1 and 2: Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to: gain fluency in the basics of music construction in order to have a firm foundation on which to build the study of music theory. These basics include musical symbols, key signatures, basic intervals, tetrachords and major and minor scales; sight read simple melodies; identify intervals, simple chords, and melodies aurally; approach music intellectually, to enhance his or her performance; and understand and delight in the music.

Instruction: 

Version 1 and 2: Major topics covered in the course are: notation; rhythm; meter; scales; key signatures; intervals; triads; cadence structures; introduction to harmonization. Methods of instruction include lecture and evaluation. Evaluation criteria include written exams and oral exams, as well as practice.

Credit recommendation: 

Version 1: In the upper division baccalaureate degree category, or in the lower division baccalaureate/associate degree category, 3 semester hours in Music Fundamentals (12/03) (4/07). Version 2: In the lower division baccalaureate/associate degree category, 3 semester hours in Music Fundamentals (11/10) (10/15 revalidation) (10/20 revalidation).
