For nearly 20 years, CUNY School of Professional Studies has been at the forefront of online education within the City University of New York. They offer an extensive range of fully online undergraduate and graduate degrees, certificates, and professional programs, tailored for adults aiming to advance their education or careers. Bachelor’s degrees are all Degree-Completer programs, requiring 24 prior credits in good standing for admission.

Forms of Credit: 
  • Credit by Examination: Hundreds of examinations have been evaluated for credit, including language proficiency exams in over 40 languages
  • Credit by Portfolio Evaluation: Prepare portfolios that reflect the knowledge and expertise gained outside the classroom.
  • Credit for Non-Collegiate Learning is a credit recommendation for college-level learning acquired outside of a college or university.
  • Credentials and Trainings evaluated by the American Council on Education (ACE) and the National College Credit Recommendation Service (NCCRS) may be eligible for college credit recommendations.
  • CUNY SPS also awards credit for currently reviewed licenses and certifications in the fields of Health Information Management, IT, Project Management, Real Estate, Business, Nursing, and Allied Health fields.

The total of prior learning credit from portfolio evaluation, examination, non-collegiate learning, and corporate or military training cannot exceed 45 credits. The total of all prior learning credit, including transfer credit, cannot exceed 105 credits.

CUNY SPS believes that all learning is valuable and should be recognized, regardless of where it happened. Over 50% of our bachelor’s degree graduates have some form of CPL on their record, saving them time and money toward degree completion.

CUNY SPS also has many Zero Cost Textbook (ZTC) courses. Over 50% of undergraduate sections are ZTC. They offer three undergraduate “Z-Degrees” in Sociology, Communication and Media, and Liberal Studies that can be completed without ever purchasing a textbook.

CUNY SPS was ranked #11 in the nation out of more than 348 schools on U.S. News & World Report’s 2024 list of Best Online Bachelor’s Programs, and ranked #3 in the nation for Best Online Bachelor’s Programs for Veterans.
