Learner Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to: identify the purpose and use of the CPT manual; discuss the formatted sections of the manual; accurately assign CPT codes for services and procedures; and appropriately append CPT modifiers.
Instruction:
Major topics include: overview of the CPT manual including: CPT format; evaluation and management; anesthesia and modifiers; introduction to the surgery section and integumentary system; musculoskeletal system; respiratory section; cardiovascular; female genital system, maternity care and delivery; general surgery I and II; radiology sections; pathology/laboratory section; medicine section and Level II National Codes. Prerequisites: Introduction to Medical Coding and Billing (251) and Introduction to Medical Terminology (253).
Credit recommendation:
In the lower division baccalaureate/associate degree category, 3 semester hours in Allied Health and Bioinformatics (3/10). *NOTE: Course numbers on transcripts may reflect different prefixes depending upon where a course is offered.
