Learner Outcomes: 
Students will be able to describe the medical environment including its organization, stakeholders, and the most significant technologies, discuss healthcare regulatory requirements and standards behind an EHR system, demonstrate understanding of healthcare terminology, basic workflows, and clinical processes, describe the essential elements of computing including hardware, software, networking, and change control, apply skills necessary for IT support and IT problem solving in the medical workplace, and discuss adherence to standard code of conduct policies and security best practices in daily healthcare IT workflow.
Instruction: 
This course is classroom based and may be taken as a standard course (283) or in a two-part series (EAP version, 283/2 and 283/3); both versions consist of interactive lectures, activities, quizzes, a practical scenario based laboratory component and a final examination preparing students to sit for the Healthcare IT certification examination. Topics include healthcare IT fundamentals, the medical environment, using IT in the medical workplace, providing medical IT support, and security.
Credit recommendation: 
In the lower division baccalaureate/associate degree category, 3 semester hours in Information Technology, HIT Information, Health Information Technology, or Healthcare (2/12). NOTE: Students must successfully complete both Part 1 (283/2) and Part 2 (283/3) of the EAP version to benefit from the credit recommendation.
