Public Speaking (COM 101)

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to: Identify and demonstrate proficient knowledge based on the content of this course regarding the principal goals of a given speech and ensure that speeches, including how its various facets are organized so as to achieve those goals; identify and demonstrate proficient knowledge about speech structure, target audience, speech types, and supporting presentation aides; distinguish between hearing, listening and listening critically and determine which techniques will assist in gaining maximum critical listening participation from an audience; research the content and ideas of the speech to gain support for the ideas that the speaker is presenting and appropriately incorporate these ideas into the speech; outline a speech as a means to take raw ideas and turn them into an appropriate presentation, including the preparation of appropriate visual aids; organize a speech including the introduction, transitions, conclusion and the body of the speech; demonstrate critical analysis of and commentary on various types of speeches; and develop and deliver their own speeches.
Major topics include: Speech format, research/development/outlining, organizing your speech, various presentation skills, types of speeches for audiences and occasions, skill-building, active listening, audience awareness, supporting an argument, compelling an audience, persuasive speech, use of presentation materials, public address, critical analysis of speeches of others and oneself, and speech copywriting.
In the lower division baccalaureate / associate degree category, 3 semester hours in Public Speaking, English, or Communications (5/24).
