Talmud 35 - Survey Makos (T35)

Learner Outcomes: 

Version 1 and 2: Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to: discuss the literary and linguistic elements characteristic of the Talmudic Aramaic, allowing a systematic reading of the Talmudic text; discuss the essential substance of the legal/ceremonial material addressed in the Talmudic discussion; and discuss the running Talmudic commentary offered in the Rashi gloss.

Instruction: 

Version 1 and 2: Students read and study the second and third chapters of tractate Makos employing the commentary of Rashi. Instruction and peer study address the issues of inadvertent manslaughter, and other transgressions that result in lashes as punishment sins. Topics include: the effects of repentance and the difference between accidental and intentional transgressions.

Credit recommendation: 

Version 1 and 2: In the lower division baccalaureate/associate degree category, 2 semester hours in Judaic Studies, Jurisprudence, Near Eastern Studies, or Religion (8/08) (12/19 revalidation).
