Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to: analyze the historical and social contexts that have shaped the American education system; identify and evaluate the key professional, ethical, and legal standards that govern the teaching profession; summarize effective instructional and classroom management strategies; critically assess contemporary challenges and opportunities in American education; and develop a portfolio of work that reflects a deep engagement with the chosen areas of study.
Teaching as a Profession provides a comprehensive exploration of teaching as a profession in the 21st-century American educational landscape. This course offers a flexible and in-depth examination of the multifaceted roles and responsibilities of a teacher. Participants will delve into the historical, philosophical, and sociological foundations of American education. Students critically analyze contemporary issues and trends, including curriculum development, instructional strategies, classroom management, educational technology, and the legal and ethical responsibilities of educators.
In the lower division baccalaureate/associate degree category, 3 semester hours in Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, Secondary Education, or Educational Leadership (6/25).
