Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to: identify key figures in fashion history and analyze their contributions to the evolution of style and design; examine the social, political, and economic factors that influenced the work of major fashion designers and influencers; trace the development of fashion movements and trends shaped by influential designers, celebrities, and cultural icons; evaluate the impact of technological advancements, such as textile innovations and digital media, on fashion evolution; analyze how major influencers in fashion have challenged societal norms and redefined beauty standards over time; compare and contrast the design philosophies and signature styles of influential designers from different historical periods; assess the role of fashion media, including magazines, film, and social media, in amplifying the influence of key fashion figures; and discuss the global influence of Western and non-Western designers in shaping contemporary fashion.
History of Fashion: Major Influencers in Fashion (HIS-335) explores the evolution of fashion through the lens of its most influential designers, trendsetters, and cultural icons. Students will examine the historical impact of key figures, from early couturiers to contemporary fashion innovators, analyzing how their work has shaped global style, textiles, and industry standards. The course covers the contributions of designers such as Charles Frederick Worth, Coco Chanel, Christian Dior, Yves Saint Laurent, and Alexander McQueen, alongside fashion influencers from the entertainment, art, and social media spheres. The course highlights how major influencers have challenged norms, redefined aesthetics, and responded to cultural shifts. By the end of the course, students will be able to critically assess the lasting legacies of fashion’s greatest visionaries and their relevance in today’s industry.
In the lower division baccalaureate/associate degree category OR in the upper division baccalaureate degree category, 3 semester hours in Fashion Merchandising, Fashion Design, Fashion Technology, Clothing and Textiles, or Museum Studies (11/25).
