Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to: identify the foundational concepts of learning theories; explore the neuroscience of learning and its educational implications; analyze the principles of behaviorism and their application in teaching; examine social cognitive theory and its emphasis on observational learning; list the processes of encoding and storing information in memory; analyze retrieval and forgetting mechanisms within information processing theory; explore cognitive learning processes such as problem-solving and metacognition; identify the principles of constructivism and their application in education; analyze various theories and principles of motivation in learning; explore the concept of self-regulated learning and its importance; expound on how contextual influences impact learning and development.
Students will study the various learning theories via required readings and submit multiple assignments which reflect applied understanding of the material. Assessment also includes a final consisting of multiple-choice questions.
In the lower division baccalaureate/associate degree category, 3 semester hours in Education, Special Education, or Educational Studies (7/24).
