Ramapo for Children | Evaluated Learning Experience
Internship in Special Education/Advanced CLASSP (SPE 310)
Ramapo for Children, New York, NY and various approved human service agency program sites throughout the New York City area.
Six 3.5 hour sessions and two 4.5 hour sessions (total 30 hours).
Instructional delivery format:
Traditional classroom model
During the internship program, students will: complete 150 hours of supervised field experience; actively participate in class discussions; maintain a dialogue journal which includes observations and recordings of children's behavior, personal reflections on the nature and meaning of interaction with children, recording of behavior management situations and the strategies implemented, and questions/concerns about the field experience; read and respond to professional journal articles; complete and present a group case study.
Students need to be actively involved in an educational or recreational program in which they are working directly with special needs and/or at-risk children, under the supervision and assessment of site staff members, during the time they are enrolled in the internship. This constitutes the fieldwork component of the internship course. Additionally, students are required to attend eight classes taught by a qualified instructor and are also required to submit monthly journal entries, article responses, and a case study presentation (see Learner Outcomes).
In the lower division baccalaureate/associate degree category, OR in the upper division baccalaureate degree category, 6 semester hours in Education, Special Education, or Therapeutic Recreation (3/11) (5/16 revalidation).
