Learner Outcomes: 

Students will be able to: use tools and equipment safely; demonstrate electrical safety and respond to emergency situations; demonstrate safe use of chemicals and hazmats; use PPE and work-safe apparel appropriately; select tool appropriate for task; select hardware, fasteners, and adhesives; read instruments and measuring devices; estimate and order materials; read and interpret blueprints; perform interior rough carpentry including drywall, flooring, and insulation; perform interior finish carpentry including wood borders, wainscoting, and paneling; perform exterior rough carpentry including siding; perform exterior finish carpentry including decking and porches; install and repair dishwashers and piping; repair and replace plumbing fixtures, valves, gaskets, seals and washers; identify plumbing architectural symbols; clean waste lines; perform weatherization; repair and replace hot water heaters and pumps; identify and describe principles of arc welding, oxyacetylene welding, and wire-feed/MIG welding; change filters, caulk, install weather stripping to windows and doors; repair suspended ceiling tile; clean gutters and downspouts, maintain power equipment; perform lawn tasks such as proper mowing, seed and sod law, prune trees and bushes, grade topsoil; maintain HVAC systems and describe HVAC fundamentals. Performance Component: Construct Frame (31%), Plumbing: Sweat Piping (21%), Electricity: Rough Wiring (17%), Dry Wall (17%), and Electricity:  Finish Wiring (14%).

Instruction: 

NOCTI and NBS exams assess individuals' end-of-program knowledge and skills in an online proctored proficiency examination format. In addition, some programs administer a NOCTI/NBS performance component test to assess application of skills.

Credit recommendation: 

In the lower division baccalaureate/associate degree category, 3 semester hours in Building Trades, Facility Maintenance, Facility Management, or Methods and Materials (5/12) (12/16 revalidation) (12/21 revalidation). NOTE: An additional 1-2 credits may be awarded based on successful completion of the Performance Component when given in conjunction with the written proficiency examination.
