Learner Outcomes: 

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to: discuss portions of Babylonian Talmud from Makkot folios 2-9 with Rashi's commentary; enrich their Talmudic vocabulary and knowledge of its logical give and take; and begin to independently study Talmudic texts.

Instruction: 

The course focuses on developing language skills with an ability to decipher the cryptic Talmudic text and reconstruct the dialogue, while increasing students' knowledge to grant them tools to pursue independent study. Tractates and texts may vary, with a minimum of 20 folio pages of Talmud. Methods of instruction include lecture, discussion and textual preparation. Study guide is provided for the proficiency exam format. Prerequisite: Introduction to The Talmud and related terminology. 

Credit recommendation: 

In the upper division baccalaureate degree category, 3 semester hours in Talmud or Hebraic Studies (10/10) (8/15 revalidation).
