Learner Outcomes: 

Upon successful completion, students will be able to: interact with and develop a relationship with a person with disabilities; provide support as that person develops a new skills or experience; serve as a tutor; reflect on the process of learning; present a joint project with the person with disabilities about the learning experience; and demonstrate key concept of experiential learning with self-reflection and research.


This course is a hands-on, service-learning, interactive experience that allows students to be both tutor and learner as they guide a person with disabilities through a new life experience, such as learning a new hobby, sport, or mode or artistic expression. Student assessment consists of journal reflection and final portfolio or project.

Credit recommendation: 

In the lower division baccalaureate/associate degree category, 1 semester hour in Curative Education, Social Therapy, Education, Special Education, Waldorf Education, Social Work, Human Services, and any discipline that could benefit from such a complementary learning experience (10/10) (11/15 revalidation) (10/20 revalidation).
