Introduction to Medical Coding and Billing (251)*

Learner Outcomes: 

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to: identify major health insurance providers, demonstrate proficiency in 1500 claim form completion, and use critical thinking skills and problem solving techniques for reimbursement issues.

Instruction: 

Major topics include: major health insurance components and terminology; introduction to Current Procedural Technology (CPT) and International Classification of Diseases, 9th Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM); charge and payment entry processes; medical office billing procedures; patient records; billing scenarios and the 1500 claim form.

Credit recommendation: 
In the lower division baccalaureate/associate degree category, 3 semester hours in Allied Health and Bioinformatics (10/09) (3/10). *NOTE: Course numbers on transcripts may reflect different prefixes depending upon where a course is offered.
