Learner Outcomes: 

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to: outline the primary aspects of integrating and troubleshooting premise environmental control systems into the whole-home system through class discussion, skills application, and written testing.

Instruction: 

Topics include: fundamentals of home environmental controls;  lighting characteristics; requirements for various lighting sources;  lighting load; operation and functions of lighting controls; operation and functions of Power Line Control (PLC) devices; compliance with the National Electrical code (NEC) and other safety guidelines; organization and function of access control systems wiring; various types of user interfaces; difference between hardware and software based interfaces; advantages and disadvantages of analog versus digital cameras; components and purpose of HVAC systems; function of HVAC controls and zones; configuration of digital environmental management systems. Participants are evaluated through written examinations and proctored hands-on labs of core skill competencies.

Credit recommendation: 

In the lower division baccalaureate/associate degree category OR in the associate degree/certificate category, 2 semester hours in General Technology or Digital Home Technology Integration (11/12).
