Arnot Ogden Medical Center School of Nursing
Arnot Ogden Medical Center School of Nursing, an NCCRS member since December 1980, is a voluntary, nonprofit hospital located in Elmira, New York. On July 1, 2011 the Arnot Ogden Medical Center became part of an integrated healthcare delivery system known as Arnot Health. The System is comprised of the Arnot Ogden Medical Center, St. Joseph's Hospital (Elmira, New York) and IRA Davenfort Memorial Hospital (Bath, New York). The hospital has the skilled personnel and equipment to provide not only the standard hospital services, but also specialty services unusual in a community hospital. Arnot Ogden is the center for kidney dialysis and radiation therapy for a wide geographic area. Its neonatal intensive care unit cares for critically ill babies from a nine-county area. The hospital has an extensive cardiac program, including open-heart surgery; and two CT scanners plus MRI provide valuable additions to the diagnostic capabilities of the hospital.
The School of Nursing was established by action of the Board of Managers in July 1889. At that time it was called Training School for Nurses and was one of the earliest in the country. The School of Nursing is a 27-month educational program of theory and related clinical experiences. The main objectives of the program are to educate the student to function as a beginning practitioner of nursing in a health care facility that may include clients in each developmental stage of life and to meet the professional standards of the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing, the National League for Nursing and the New York State Education Department. During the first two years of the program, foundation courses in the physical, biological, and social sciences as well as a course in English are taught by members of the Elmira College faculty on the college campus. The college library as well as other campus facilities are available for student use. Students are encouraged to use these resources to enrich their experience and to assist in independent study.
The Elmira Psychiatric Center provides clinical facilities for the integrative application of psychiatric nursing concepts. The Arnot Ogden Medical Center offers clinical facilities for experiences in critical care nursing, medical-surgical nursing, maternity nursing, and pediatric nursing. Planned field experiences, workshops, and conferences in the community supplement the instruction and clinical experience.
