Learner Outcomes: 

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to: apply core knowledge from biological, behavioral, social and nursing sciences in the practice of family-centered nursing; contribute to the health care team in promoting health integrity in the child-bearing family including the use of resources; perform family-centered nursing care using the core behaviors essential for nursing practice within the framework of the Nurse Practice Act; build the nursing plan of care using the nursing process to implement, manage, document and evaluate care of the childbearing family; discuss the impact of society and environment on family health integrity in the delivery of evidence-based nursing practice; contribute to the multidisciplinary team as the caregiver, educator, and advocate of nursing care using professional communication and reciprocal caring; and perform safe, effective and competent family centered nursing care to promote, maintain, and restore health using critical thinking and sound nursing judgment skills.

Instruction: 
Nursing 105 focuses on holistic nursing care of the child-bearing family. Holistic nursing care of the child-bearing family includes the impact of society and the environment on family health preservation to integrity. The roles of the nurse as educator and advocate are emphasized with a focus on family wellness. Opportunities are provided in a variety of clinical settings to practice family-centered nursing. Students are encouraged to explore their personal values regarding nursing care of the child-bearing family.
Credit recommendation: 
In the lower division baccalaureate/associate degree category, 3 semester hours (1.5 lecture and 1.5 clinical) in Nursing (9/98 revalidation) (8/03 revalidation) (9/08 revalidation) (12/13 revalidation).
