Bridgeport Hospital School of Nursing (BHSN), a National CCRS member since 1989, was established in 1884 and is the oldest school of nursing in Connecticut. Bridgeport Hospital, a private, not-for-profit acute care teaching hospital is the parent organization for BHSN. The Hospital primarily serves patients from Fairfield and New Haven counties and is a member of the Yale New Haven Health System. The BHSN nursing program is accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing, Inc. (ACEN) and licensed by the Connecticut Board of Examiners for Nursing (BOEN) as a two-year diploma program.

The nursing program offers an intensive curriculum designed to provide students with learning experiences necessary to achieve the overall outcome that students will be abel to assist individuals, families, or communities toward the achievement of optimal health. The curriculum, based on the philosophy of the School's objectives and organizing framework is comprised of forty credits in nursing and thirty credits in biological, behavioral, and social sciences. The curriculum integrates theory and clinical practice to meet the BHSN educational outcomes and state requirements for eligibility of the nursing program graduates for admission to the registered nurse licensing examination.

The organizational plan of the curriculum is composed of two levels with the first year designated as Level One and the second year as Level Two. All students enter the nursing program as one cohort each fall. The traditional nursing program is 69 weeks in length consisting of four academic semesters and one summer course. However, students may choose to accelerate in the program by continuing studies through the summer months and graduate one semester early. Hence, there are two graduating classes per year; the accelerated track in December and the traditional track in May.
